Located in north-central Missouri and just over an hour north of Columbia, Missouri, Long Branch State Park provides your “beach” fix without leaving the state. Plus, there are plenty of other activities like camping, hiking, and fishing to keep you busy. If you are looking for things to do outside in Missouri, Long Branch State Park might just be the place for you.
Things to do outside in Missouri: Long Branch State Park
Long Branch State Park: Camping
Plenty of modern campsites are available, but my favorite are the walk-in campsites. They put you right by the water with an essentially private waterfront lake view and mini beach area to yourself.

You can also head to the main swimming beach for more conventional sand and sun.
Three boat ramps provide access to the 2,400 acre lake for water sports and fishing, and a marina is available for all your camping, fishing, and snacking needs.
Long Branch State Park: Hiking
You can also grab a free park map at the marina to guide you on your hiking adventures. Long Branch State Park preserves some of the last savanna and prairie remnants in the Chariton River Hills. Little Chariton Prairie Trail provides 1.4 miles of striking wildflower prairie views, but be sure to wear your sunscreen or hat for this one as you won’t be in the shade. I like to bring my phone and a plant identifier app to learn more about the different flowers I find along the way.
For a more adventurous hike, check out the Bee Trace Trail, totaling 7.4 miles with a 3.9 mile north loop and a 3.5 mile south loop. The south loop even includes a few backpacking campsites if you’re looking for a more primitive experience, but don’t forget the bug spray because the ticks are no joke!
